Mazda MX-5 NC Typical faults. What to look for

1. Engine and transmission

Engine oil leaks: Most often occur at the valve cover gaskets and front oil seal.

Timing chain (on 2.0-liter engines): With high mileage, it can stretch, which is accompanied by noise.

Manual transmission: Models with a 6-speed gearbox may have problems with the synchronizers (especially 2nd and 3rd gears).

Automatic transmission: Less common, but it is important to check for smooth shifting.

2. Suspension and steering

Worn silent blocks: Over time, the front and rear silent blocks begin to creak and need to be replaced.

Steering rack: A knocking noise may appear, especially on cars with high mileage.

3. Body and corrosion

Corrosion: A typical problem for the MX-5, especially on the lower parts of the doors, sills and rear arches. It is recommended to inspect the underbody and hidden cavities.

Convertible roof: Soft-top models may experience water leaks through worn seals. Hard-top (RHT) models may also squeak or crack.

4. Electrical

Central locking: Sometimes fails due to problems with the wiring in the doors.

Engine management system: Sensors (such as the mass air flow sensor) may fail, leading to unstable engine operation.

5. Brake system

Wear of discs and pads: On sports models, the brake system wears out faster with vigorous driving.

Rear brakes: Calipers may seize due to contamination.

6. Air conditioning system

Air conditioning compressor: May fail due to refrigerant leakage or wear.

Tips:

  • When buying, be sure to check the service history.
  • Inspect the car for signs of poor-quality body repair.
  • Take a test drive to make sure the transmission, engine, and suspension are in good condition.
  • Don't forget to service the car regularly, paying special attention to anti-corrosion treatment.
